Hello Developers, Linux users might have noticed, but there is another open source project called Beagle out there. http://beagle-project.org/Main_Page This a desktop search tool integrated with Gnome, which you allow searching you files, mails, text processing documents, etc. very quickly. It is gaining quite a lot into popularity, it is probably the best open source desktop search tool available at the moment. It is backed by well-known open source developers such Robert Love and Nat Friedman from Novell. Another interesting news is that Gentoo-Portage, a Linux distribution, distribute Open BEAGLE. http://gentoo-portage.com/sci-libs/beagle FreeBSD also distributes Open BEAGLE. http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/ports/devel/open-beagle/ I discovered that there is a bug report on Gentoo-Portage about a name clash between a library of both Beagle's tools. http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=141137 The problem cisely is with the naming of library "libbeagle.so", which is the core EC library in Open BEAGLE, and is also provided by the Beagle's search tool. Apparently, this causes some confusions for peoples who want to install both softwares on their machine. Given that, and that we are nice peoples, I am considering to change the name of the core EC libbeagle.so library of Open BEAGLE for something else more cise. I have several suggestions in mind: libbeagle-core.so libbeagle-EC.so libbeagle-base.so Do you think we should rename that library to avoid the name clash? And if so, which name do you fer? By the way, Open BEAGLE was started before the Beagle search tool. So it is *them* you copied *our* name... :-) I thought once that we should sue Novell for stealing the name of our project, but it pass away very quickly, in few seconds... lol ;-) All the best, -- Christian Gagné http://cgagne.googlepages.com |
