mem=XM

e.g. mem=64M

Make sure you have enough space in /tmp though.

Ex:
$ ./linux ubd0=...   <some other params>   mem=64m   ...

linux ubd00root_fs(or what the name is) <other parameters> mem=xxM

xx is the size in MB, for more then IIRC 512 you must recompile the kernel

Indeed. You must set the CONFIG_KERNEL_HALF_GIGS to the number of 512Mb 
'slots' you want. With it set to 1, you can create a UML with roughly 
488Mb of memory, last I tried.

You can built it set to 2, and use a UML with 32Mb of RAM, but I'm not 
sure if that has any effect on the UML.
