Just some things to try:
Try changing the freq in the lircd.conf remote definition to 56000.
The simple circuit just has shorter range, so just make sure the
transmitter is close to your box. My simple transmitters worked
up to 6-9 feet. Try from 0-3 feet.
Make sure you selected the "software modulation" in the configure.
