I don't see a problem running several different perl versions on a single
linux system. But you should have installed a good gcc.

Perl 5.10 is now over 4 years "old" and Perl 5.12 over 2 years.
As I wrote: 5.10.0 is required - at least 5.10.1 is recommened - 5.12.x
and 5.14.x are supported.

Don't we ... ? Even Perl 5.10 is outdated by the Perl developers - and for
example removed from the 'ActivePerl' distro for this reason (the reason
was told me by ActiveState!?)!
At least the solution is simple: If you (possibly have to) stay on an
'old' OS version with an 'old' Perl version - it is possible, that you
have to stay on an 'old' assp version too!
>most distros
Huu..... let's see - which linux has no Perl 5.12 available (at least an
upgrade to 5.12)
CentOS 6 - NO !?
RHEL 6 - YES
FedoraCore YES
Ubuntu 11 - yes
Debian Lenny - yes
Novell OES - yes
openSUSE - yes
SLES - yes
gentoo - yes
FreeBSD - yes
Mandriva - yes
Mageia - yes
darwin on SnowLeopard - yes
So if 'most' means 'CentOS' and some other minor you are right. But if
RHEL6 has an RPM for Perl 5.12 - I don't know CentOS - should it not be
possible to install this package to CentOS?

Thomas,
This is all fine and dandy.
However, you should consider that most distros do not come with
the latest perl version.
For example , for CentOS (a distro I am very happy with and using
since 2007), it took to v6.0 from v5.2 to come shipped with perl
v5.10. For versions 5.2/5.3/5.4/5.5 and 5.6 it was always perl v5.8
Is it possible you chaps could consider this ?
