I've observed a similar problem with Audacity on my Linux system when I've=
used the binary that was installed from the distribution files rather than=
having compiled it myself. It seems to be due to the program not having bee=
compiled with sufficient optimisation set in the Makefile.
Having recompiled the same version with maximum optimisation for speed rath=
than size, it positively zooms along.
I don't know if this is helpful or not, but it might give you a bit of a=20
pointer - if you can compile it yourself and can optimise for speed I think=
you'll see a big improvement.
