OK, found my mistake now.
I installed Python 2.3 but didn't register that I already had 2.2 and
dbus had linked to that. When I made sure the 2.2 files were copied
across it all worked.

I can't change the window manager. The website has some decidedly
circular references which *really* need to be sorted out.
I am advised to use the new 'look and feel' application, but then am
told this is superceded by someone else's group of tarballs. However
none of these seem to include changing window manager and I am quite
unable to find the whole 'look and feel' app. There now seems to be no
way a can change to my preferred sawfish (I was using this quite happily
with the old ROX Session).
