I think there is a way to change that with the rate option of iwconfig.

Normally there, we can change that with:

iwpriv wlan0 network_type g

But I get the following error:

Interface doesn't accept private ioctl...
network_type (8BF2): Invalid argument


(If I set the network_type to b; then I have no error but it does 
nothing as I am already(?) on network type b).

The fact that my interface nevertheless support speed up to 54Mb/s let 
me think that I am perhaps already on 802.11g and that the 802.11b I see 
in iwconfig is erroneous.
