The navigation is exactly the same as linux, since you are in fact

Which exact model of gumstix did you get? I think that the basix ships
with an older image. Not sure about the other ones.

You'd only replace the filesystem if the one that's there is missing
something that you want, in which case you would build buildroot with
the missing feature enabled, and then burn the filesystem produced by
buildroot onto the gumstix.

It depends on whether you want to use buildroot or OE. They have
