As you see from my previous email, I am confused about this. I think that
CONFIG_IDE_TASK_IOCTL may have been needed at some point in the past, but
it appears (at least to me, though I am ignorant) to be not needed with
the current 2.4.20 kernel.
Other better-informed people should be commenting on this soon.

I personally think so. The high temps are better tolerated by fluid drive
bearings than by the older ball bearings, which I think your drive
has. On the other hand, it's lived three years, so perhaps it's very
tolerant of high temps.
