I think the original poster want something else, more like "map to
sphere" from Gimp and i don't think this is easily doable in Inkscape.
I would be tempted to do this manually: create the text and map to
sphere in Gimp, import the bitmap in Inkscape and manually trace over it.
Another way would be to map text to sphere in Gimp, select the result,
transform the selection to path, export the path as SVG from Gimp and
import it in Inkscape.
