OK, I figured this out. The call AC_SUBST(LIBOBJS) at the end of
configure.in in both player and rtk2 breaks autoconf-2.54. It can safely
be removed (LIBOBJ is not referenced in any Makefile.in down the tree as
far as grep can see). With that removed, rtk still wouldn't configure, but
I traced the problem to a bug in the libavcodec checking - I guess 2.5 is
more picky about syntax.
RTK2 now builds for me with autoconf-2.13 and 2.54.
So I no longer feel a pressing need to upgrade.
