I've found another way to freeze the display without locking the computer.
As mentioned before, moving the Blender window off the bottom of the
screen works every time. Have to use Alt-SysRq-E to recover the system.
The way I just observed was to simply run a bunch of GL clients and wait
about 1 minute. For instance, I ran gears -root & sproingies & lament &,
then watched for a very brief time. After a minute the display froze but
the cursor could still be moved. I don't think any of the clients was
off-screen, but all of them were partially obscured by each other and an
xterm. Again Alt-SysRq-E recovered the system. This was at 1024x768x16
if it matters.
