Thanks Phil. As I mentioned, that's the first thing I grep'd for but there were no entries with 'Wed Sep 22 12' in hosts.deny. That's what got me looking in /opt/local/share/denyhosts/data where it turned up in purge-history.
I have periodically edited hosts.deny by hand to add blocked IPs in the same way that denyhosts adds them, e.g.,
# Terry: Tue Jul 13 12:27:00 2010 | ALL: 188.8.131.52
Could this have confused things?
