Summary: win2k don't start
Initial Comment:
I have a windows 2000 system with sp4.
I have downloaded the windows binary, installed it, and the tried to launch it.
The program immediatly crashed - no screens were visible at all, i have received a windows gui error message window with:
" the procedure's entry point (getaddrinfo) is not present in dll (WS2_32.dll)"
This is my mirrorlike translation from a hungarian error message, but the content is the same
I also tried to download another WS2_32.dll from the internet, and looked into the dll with dependency walker, but i didn't found such function in the dll. I didn't tried to replace the old dll with this new one (i don't really trust it).

Hi,
I already upgraded my operating system to Win Xp.
Now, the video card lacks the minimum Open GL version.
That was a known feature, so i didn't bothered with that much anymore.
I will play FreeOrion in my next life :)

Message:
If I recall correctly, then earlier FreeOrion versions were compiled with
Visual Studio 2005 and without Ogre3D. If there is something broken in
libraries, then you have to compile FreeOrion on your Windows 2000. Problem
is that project for VS 2005 was already deleted from repository because was
unmaintained, but you can try scons/cmake/Visual Studio 2008 or Visual
Studio 2005(from repository archive). But if I were you, I would upgrade
system. It may be simpler.
Windows 2000 is too old system.
Please let us know

According this page:
http://www.sans.org/resources/malwarefaq/ms-sql-exploit.php
it may be virus or damage caused by virus.

Sorry to mix up things. So that, i have 2 computers here, 1 with win2k, and
another with ubuntu, the machine with ubuntu has the geforce mx200. It is
just a test/practice machine that is not intended for daily use.
The original bug related to the win2k system, and as others may also ready
this topic i would focus on that.
Yes I have .Net framework 2.0.
the WS2_32.dll is dated back to june 19th of 2003
version no is: 5.0.2195.6601

Message:
If he has GeForce MX200, then he has OpenGL 1.2 and that is too old. That
may be also problem that FreeOrion doesn't start.

Message:
What's changed since last summer is the UTF-8 support that seems to be
related to this problem.

Message:
Did you install .NET Framework 2.0 (or later)? If there is version for
Windows 2000 because FreeOrion on Windows XP and later requires it.

Message:
Ok, then how about getting a workaround on win2k?
I already installed freeorion on win2k, and "played" with it a little last
summer, so something has changed in it after that
should i try to change my WS2_32.dll with an Xp version? will that work
together with win2k or collapse the system?

GeForce MX200 is too old for FreeOrion. Sorry.

Message:
The point of the link was to note possible causes of the problem, not to
suggest a user workaround.
Ubuntu 9.04 changed some libraries that makes the statically liked
binaries not work. This irrelvant to this bug.

I red through the link you gave, and become much less enthusiast, as it
says i must upgrade to a win xp system, which i sure won't do.
I also tried to download and install free orion to an ubuntu jaunty
jackalope system, it didn't started there too. It searched for a
/usr/lib/libX11 file which doesn't exists on my machine. But this is just a
practice pc, there is a 16MB GeForce MX200 which may prevent me to start
the game.

Googling suggests this is a unicode problem with earlier versions of the
windows library...
