Summary: OSX 10.4.8: Can't start inkscape
Initial Comment:
I am running a 20” G5 iMac w/iSight, 2.1 GHZ
1.5Gig memory
250 gig HD
I installed all the Xcode/X11 stuff I could find.
I installed inkscape .45
When I click on inkscape it says to download the X stuff for 10.3.9.
I cannot get inkscape to start.
Now what?

JiHO
It got very late out last night but after producing this:
Last login: Wed Apr 11 22:20:46 on ttyp1
Welcome to Darwin!
thomas-goulds-imac-g5:~ thomasgould$ type -a open-x11
open-x11 is /usr/bin/open-x11
thomas-goulds-imac-g5:~ thomasgould$ file /usr/bin/open-x11
I was able to start Inkscape.
Now let the fun begin.
Thanks for hanging in with me.

Hi teejayzee,
open-x11 is part of the X11User package (which can be downloaded for
Panther and is on the install DVD for Tiger) which has no direct relation
with XCode. If I recall correctly, what you install with XCode is the X11
SDK which is only needed to _compile_ software which use X11.
Anyway, X11User provides the X server and that's the only thing Inkscape
should need to function. Could you please:
- check if you have the application X11 in /Application/Utilities
- check if there's an install receipt for X11User.pkg in
/Library/Receipts
If there is no receipt it means that you did not install the correct X11
package.
1 -> Install the X11 package from Tiger DVD
(warning: _not_ X11 SDK). On your Tiger DVD, you need to double click the
"Optional Installs" package (scroll down the window it is just under the
Xcode tools folder) and once on the Custom selection screen unselect
everything except X11, under Applications.
If there is a receipt but you do not have open-x11 and/or you do not have
X11.app it means that X11 was not installed properly.
2.1 -> reinstall the X11 package over what is left of your previous faulty
install, refer to 1 above.
2.2 -> uninstall what is left of the package are reinstall it properly. To
uninstall it use OSXPM [http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/21349] , go to
the uninstall tab, select X11User and uninstall. Afterwards, go back to 1.
Hope that will sort things out.

Not sure how, but XCode finally uninstalled COMPLETELY, I think.
Reinstalled package.
Ran terminal as requested.

Welcome to Darwin!
thomas-goulds-imac-g5:~ thomasgould$ type -a open-x11
-bash: type: open-x11: not found
thomas-goulds-imac-g5:~ thomasgould$ file /usr/bin/open-x11
So, I do not have the open-x11 binary file.
If X11 was properly in stalled, where is the open-X11 file?
I'm out of ideas.

Checked everything I could find/think of.
Went to X11 instr. sheet and typed in:
Last login: Tue Apr 10 21:27:11 on ttyp1
Welcome to Darwin!
thomas-goulds-imac-g5:~ thomasgould$ $ sudo perl
/Developer/Tools/uninstall-devtools.pl
-bash: $: command not found
thomas-goulds-imac-g5:~ thomasgould$
Now I cannot re-install X11 or get to where your post said to go.
I know it's me, but I'm not stupid.
Everything someone tells me to do makes the situation worse.
I am more than willing to start at square one.
Where is that?

That error screen actually says "Inkscape.app requires Apple's X11, which
is freely downloadable from Apple's website for Panther (10.3.x) users *and
available as an optional install from the installation DVD for Tiger
(10.4.x) users.*" It's not telling you to download the version for Panther
(though that button is shown on the dialog, and perhaps it should be hidden
for tiger users).
That dialog is shown when the Inkscape launcher tries to start X11 via the
command "open-X11" and it doesn't start. If this open-X11 command doesn't
exist, i.e., wasn't installed properly by the X11 installer then there is
nothing really we can do.
As one last attempt, could you please run Terminal and type:
type -a open-x11
file /usr/bin/open-x11
and paste the output. Thanks.

I re-installed X1, updated to 11.1, installed inkscape 045.1.1 and it
still says to install Xqq. for panther and I am running 10.4.9.
As for running Console, I deleted the log and started with an empty log.
ABSOLUTELY NOTHING showed up in console because nothing happens except the
error message screen.
I have decided that whatever the problem is, it is not worth the effort,
because the program will not even run.

teejayzee, can you please run Console and paste the output shown when
starting Inkscape? I'm guessing you are missing the "open-x11" binary.

On Your Tiger install disk make sure that you have install X11 from there
and not from the apple website. X11 from the apple website is for panther
only eg X11. On the tiger disk in the optional applications you will have
X11 1.1. Once that is installed get the updates to X11 to bring it up to
1.1.3

teejayzee,
I installed X11 from the Tiger Install DVD and Inkscape worked. Starting
for the first time took a bit of waiting because I have a lot of installed
fonts.
The best instructions for installing X11 I found are at the NeoOffice.org
site. Take a look and see if it helps.

This all may be good advice, but it still doesn't work.
I have trashed all of everything and started from scratch twice and I
still get the 10.3.9 Panther message while running 10.4.8 and having loaded
X11 from the Tiger Install Disk.
There is something else amiss and I can't find it.

hnm_02,
That dialog box asks you to (re)install X11 from your Tiger install DVDs.
The version from the web is only for Panther (10.3.9) users.
Reinstall X11 from your Tiger install DVD. That should fix your problem.

Similar problem as first poster. I am using OSX 10.4.8 on a MacBook, all
the latest updates installed, X11 installed, as far as I know since I am
not a technical person.
Inkscape .45 installs, but when opening, a dialogue box pops up "Failed to
start X11" etc., with a button at the bottom of the window "Get X11 for
Panther".
I downloaded X11 for Panther and the update from Apple, but on attempting
to install, I get the message that a newer version of X11 is installed.
When attempting to install the update, I get the message that the update is
not needed.

Then your problem is probably similar to this
https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1659353&group_id=93438&atid=604306
you need to update your X11 version to the tiger version (on your Tiger
install DVD). After that, you'll see some X11 updates in software updates.
They are not strictly necessary but it's always nice to stay up to date so
install those too.
Please report here if it works so that we can close the bug.
Cheers,

This is a known problem with Inkscape on 1.3.9, please see previous bug
reports about that. All Inkscape Mac developpers run 10.4.x so it is
difficult for us to know in advance what could be wrong on 10.3.9. The
problem is worked oon anyway. In the meantime, you could use 0.44 or 0.44.1
which should run fine (you only need X11 for 10.3.9, no XCode stuff).
