The new API has been set as stable in FOP 0.92 and I'm told
this supports UTF-8 too. I'll try and see if I can adapt the
code to the new API.

It does not (.90 alpha), there is no indication from hte FOP
team that this will change in the near future (see FOP
website for details as to why). - K

FOP has just released a new version, I'll have a look
shortly to see whether it supports further character sets. - K

@karianna: currently we can't export unicode characters to
pdf output sheets, because the fop library seems to support
only latin-1 encoding. This was originated by a russian user
who would have like to be able to export cyrillic characters
to his pdf output sheet.
