As far as I know, the native i686-pc-mingw32 GCC doesn't know anything at all
about any paths that aren't in c:\ or /mingw (or whatever your MinGW root is).
In particular, the MinGW GCC won't search MSYS paths (such as /lib or /usr/lib).
This is a good thing, because MSYS libraries are not compatible with MinGW (such
a bizarre situation, huh?).
