Both lead developers use Macs as well (although I am most often on
Linux), so I do not think your problems are platformed base. I'll
respond to your note line-by-line, as there are several parts where
I'll need additional clarification to understand what you've done and
what is happening.

Which version of bibutils? You may wish to try:
http://bibutils.refbase.org/bibutils_3.35_osx_universal.tgz
Was the bibutils path automatically detected when you went to install.php?

Which script?

Can you please provide the full error message? Are you able to import
other files into refbase? You may wish to start with the import
examples provided at:
http://refbase.textdriven.com/Category:Import

As above, I'd start by downloading the version of bibutils we mirror,
extract it where you had before, run install.php so that the path to
bibutils is added to the database, and you should be ready-to-go.

If you have access to Endnote, I think the endnote2refbase tool in the
contrib directory of refbase may be a bit bitter for a one-time
import. If you can't get bibutils working with your server, you can
also use it on the command line to convert your Endnote XML file to
RIS, which refbase will import directly.

How are you trying to do this?

Matthias had at least started this process in his development version.

As with past refbase updates, this will only require that you replace
the files (preserving those that you've customized, notably your
'files' and 'initialize' directories) with the new versions & perhaps
run an upgrade.php script. Detailed updating instructions are
included with our releases.
I hope this helps, or at least can let you know where we need more
information in order to help you more.
Best,
