I've never tried, but I cannot imagine that 'the standard way' using samba does not work.
Having said that Markus's FileZilla solution does appeal.
If you've never used samba, then set up a test where it is KNOWN to work, a machine or VM running ubuntu or suse (say).
I find SuSE's yast setup tool very helpful in holding your hand over the rough bits (getting the configuration and shares right)
This will help you to setup your gumstix.
