Do you have a serial cable? If you do you can use u-boot to re-flash
even if you mess-up the Linux install. The u-boot sectors are on the
flash are write-protected, so provided you don't re-flash u-boot (which
is hard to do accidentally and not necessary for changing the Linux
bits) you don't need JTAG.
I wouldn't risk flashing u-boot without JTAG hardware but flashing a
new root_fs_arm isn't going to 'brick' your gumstix.
