Hello,
I have just really started using gramps, I LOVE it!! It is *by far* the best
genealogy program out there for Linux. I wish that I could help out, but I
really do not know any python, and even after looking at the source, I could
not figure out how to implement any of the things that I have seen here. I
just have a few suggestions/feature requests/and or small bugs to report.
1. When creating or editing a person, I want to add the source, or choose an
already existing source. The current drop down box for choosing existing
source references does not allow me to scroll down the list, and therefore
some (a lot) of my sources are not chooseable, as they are off screen. Also,
it would be nice to add a button here to create a new source, without having
to leave that screen.
2. My database consists of many GEDCOM files which have been merged
together. Some last names are all caps and others are mixed case. In the
person list, and really anywhere where you must choose a person, the sorting
is mixed up because of that. The list looks like the following (leaving out
first names for ease of example)
JACOBSON
JANS
JANS
JANS
JANSZ
JOHNSON
JOHNSTONE
JOHNSTONE
JUSTINGER
Jackson
Jans
Johnson
Johnson
Jones
Is it possible to make the sorting case insensitive?
3. In the merge people tool for every instance of a duplicate person there
is two instances reported. Example:
Say the following people are in your database:
Thomas C. Weichmann
Thomas E. Weichmann
The merge tool will report that these might be the same person, but it will
do it twice. Once with Thomas C. Weichmann as 'Person 1' and Thomas E.
Weichmann as 'Person 2', and again with Thomas E. Weichmann as
'Person 1' and Thomas C. Weichmann as 'Person 2'.
4. Is it possible to implement a new feature in the merge tool? I would
like to be able to search for a particular person to see if there are any
duplicates. In my case I had a person that I knew that was duplicated, and I
had to step through ~150 people to go to the one that I wanted.
Thank you very much for all of your hard work. Please do not view this as a
wine list or as a me only pointing out the negative side of things. Gramps
is a wonderful application. Gramps finally allowed me to once and for all
not have to boot into windows for anything. I finally have everything that I
want and need right here on Linux!!
Thank You Very Much For Your Time,
Tom Weichmann
