This is a general "issue" with device equations. As long as there are
discontinuities in equations (as e.g. divided by zero possibility) there
may be problems. Try to reformulate, if possible, to avoid such.
Your fix with the "small fixed value" is a quick (and common)
work-around for this kind of problem.
