On the AVRISP 6-pin ribbon cable, the side with the red marking is the
pin 1 side. If you look closely at the black connector, you should see
a small triangle embossed in the plastic. This triangle also marks pin
1.

Hi Dave,

  Thanks for the links.  Actually I knew which side is pin 1.  But I wasn't
sure if it is at the top or at the bottom.  I think my connections are
correct.  Any idea why I am getting the time out errors?

I haven't seen these errors before.

It could be due to the robostix or the programmer, and its hard to
tell when you only have one of each. I normally swap devices around to
figure out what works and what doesn't. It could also be due to the
version of firmware on the programmer itself.

It's possible to change the fuses so that the robostix will no longer
respond unless you clock it with an external clock source. This
happens when the all of the CKSEL bits in the high fuse byte get set
to zero. When this happens, then the only way to recover is to provide
an external clock on the XTAL1 (pin 24) of the atmega128.

Hi Dave,

  Thanks for the image.  It was very helpful.  I don't think there is
anything wrong with the either of the devices.  I was able to program the
robostix with AVRstudio, upload simple-flasher.hex and get the lights going.
 But I really would like to do things in linux.  Does AVR ISP mkii
programmer need a driver to work in linux?

No driver per-seyf, but I created a couple of udev rules files that I
use. You can find them over here:

That one works with ubuntu 9.10. It goes in /etc/udev/rules.d

It isn't a driver, it just sets the permissions up properly.

Since everything works under AVRStudio, that pretty much eliminates a HW issue.

Try using avrdude under windows and see if you can get that to work.
Look at the version of avrdude under windows. Then try it under linux,
and see which version of avrdude you're using.

Which linux OS are you using? There was some problems with certain
versions of ubuntu (Feisty Fawn and Gutsy Gibbon) where they had some
braille software which took over the serial USB ports instead of
letting the regular drivers get at them. Remove the brltty package if
you're using that version of ubuntu.

Make sure that /dev/ttyUSB0 is the right choice. So before plugging in
the avrisp, make sure that ttyUSB0 doesn't exist, and that it shows up
after plugging in the avrisp. Examing the output of dmesg after
plugging in the avrisp may also yield some clues.

 It didn't need any setup.  It just worked when plugged. However, I did need

  I was using 9.4 until today.  I just upgraded to 9.10.  I am not sure if
that had anything to do with usb port starting to work.  It broke a whole
bunch of other things and I had to downgrade a number of packages to get the
gumstix-basic-image compiling again.
