Yes, the printing code is not immediately obvious. There is a simple
bug in the diff I sent earlier ("~G" strings are ok, but "~E" are
broken). Here is a revised patch which gets those cases, passes the
sbcl tests, and looks ok from my superficial understanding of
format-general and format-exponential...
