I have installed Gramps 3.2.3 under Ubuntu 8.04, but I guess it is not the safety method ...
I kept Gramps 3.1 (so still registered into package manager, launcher, mime descriptors, etc ...), then I overwritten /usr/shar/gramps with /src from 3.2 tarball and I made a custom const.py (optional for running gramps, because file for 3.1 should also do the job). But keep in mind that Gramps 3.2 is not really installed (i.e if you need to file a bug report)
There is no python limitations for Gramps under Ubuntu 8.04, maybe just last .ded are for Ubuntu 10.04: a support issue.
Maybe general package generation needs one python version.
But without compiled files (.pyc) and only python source files (.py), Gramps should run without problem on all distributions with python 2.5 or python 2.6. Related python binding should be correct, because they are managed by the distribution.

OK. In Gramps 2, there was an option in the GEDCOM export to
filter
birth dates (without marking people 'living'). Unfortunately
this
feature has been removed (at least in version 3.1). I think it
would be
nice if it could be reintroduced.
You should use 3.2, installers are available for most
distributions and it runs where 3.1 runs.
I have Ubuntu 8.04 and I see that only 3.1 may be installed
(probably because of Python problems):

Anyway, thanks for the tips about ExportGedcom, which I might try.
