I'm using a draft manual I downloaded a few months ago from the gumst
ix website. It reads "Users: Starting off", then outlines setting up minicom, th
en "networking has a few quirks"  and outlines the modprobe usbnet command, and 
configures static ip addresses for the usb and serial port, then I type 

echo 1
 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/conf/eth0/proxy_arp
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/conf/usb0/
proxy_arp
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
iptables -t nat -I POSTROUTE -j

And then I get the error.

Enabling forwarding and masquerading would only be done if you were
setting up your Gumstix as a gateway bewteen two networks. Is this what
you're trying to do?

I'm not at my development station right now (actually I haven't had much
time to work with my stix since Ive received it) so I can't check but
one item important for enabling nat is it must be configured into the
kernel. I don't know if it's configured by default for the Gumstix but I
would suspect it's not since under the current hardware it would be rare
for it to be needed.

That being said, my ideal Waysmall system for one project I've got in
mind would be roughly shaped the way it is now, but have an ethernet
port at each end so it could be placed "inline" in a network connection
(and be powered by ethernet).=20

Hmm... I don't remember that manual.  Clearly post-dates the modular 
kernel, whatever it is, but also talks about using iptables...  As Mark 
Heilpern's already replied, I don't think the NAT stuff is being built 
in the current (or any previously released) kernels, so that's unlikely 
to work unless you customize the kernel build.  And I don't think the 
iptables binaries are built as part of any released root_fs either, so 
the fact that command's running at all is pretty unusual.  And then as 
Mark points out, it's not entirely clear why you need to turn on NAT 
anyway on the gumstix, unless you're doing something like using it as a 
router from bluetooth land to usbnet or something.

Generally the online stuff is the most up-to-date and contains the best

I'd another look on-line after your ad
vice, and on the offchance, changed the command from 

iptables -t nat -I POSTRO
UTE -j MASQUERADE -s 192.168.3.101

to

iptables -t nat -I POSTROUTING -j MASQUE
RADE -s 192.168.3.101

and it worked. 

I can now transfer files over USB to the
 gumstix, using the serial connection to control it.
