Or, simply edit config/config.php in your favourite editor, and search 
for the option $allow_thread_sort, and set to false.  If you server 
doesn't support threading, you shouldn't have it enabled.

Get forced_prefs plugin and set 'sort_by_ref' to 1 in $fp_forced_settings.

And finally, Login Manager is another option.  If you add it to the
disable_options configuration, the item is removed entirely from the
page.
