Argh.  I missed that.

I thought I had tried using 1:2:3:4, but perhaps only with the existing files
(which lack blank lines; they are just lists of points).

I take it then that all I need to do is to sort the files to create iso-lines
and add blanks between those, yes?

Sort(1) should handle the sorting; I'll just need to write a simple program
which adds a blank line whenever a specified column changes value.

for the last two examples at 
http://gnuplot.sourceforge.net/demo/heatmaps.html, i think the "splot" 
command needs an argument of 1:2:3:4 which is a regular grid of 
parameter 3 and parameter 4 at 1:2, with no blank lines.

other important instructions are:
set pm3d ...
set view ...
set contour ...

the examples are straightforward and understandable but very concise so 
be careful.
