Unfortunately, the guides project has not been worked on after GSoC
until now. There is still some work to be done to get it into 0.49 (most
importantly, converting old-style guides to new-style).
As it stands now, I think it is too early to make people too excited
about it. Note thatt he old-style -> new-style conversion, although
important for Inkscape development, will not be noticable for users. So
I would hold off on speaking about it during your SVG Open talk.
