My 2c worth- those who do the packaging play a big part... a badly
packaged piece of software can lead to more bug reports and wasted time
than a lot of other things. And it's the means that most people use to
try applications. And nor is it so simple to make packages that meet
all the requirements and work across different machines...
So personally I say thanks to those who make packages, and respect their
skills- they're 'release developers' rather than 'application
