uhhhm, with the default configuration files the "silence" at the beginning
should be only few ms. Are you sure you're looking at the right file
(rps.pcm)? BTW, even if you're using a configuration with an higher latency
(for example one with a linear phase target response, which has the spike
at the center of the file) what you see before and after the spike isn't
really silence. It's just the correction in the bass range, which is much
longer in time and much lower in level, so you don't notice it at first
glance.
The only way to reduce latency is to reduce the allowed pre-echo
and, if you use a convolver that increase the latency with the filter
length, reduce also the correction resolution in the bass range, which
allow for a shorter filter. I've tried filters shortened down to 4096 taps,
which, with proper tuning, provided quite good results, but the difference
in the bass was quite noticeable when compared with the full filter.
