Yeah, that was me with the dead board. You can always expect some kind
of infant mortality rate with these things, so no slash against gumstix.
I probably just happened to get the 1 out of 10,000 that had a bad
solder joint somewhere or whatever. No worries. Sucks ... but it happens.
I would advise getting a static mat and wrist strap and become
fanatically devout in it's use. NEVER touch a board without being
grounded. You can be carrying thousands of volts around on you, and have
enough to frazzle something even if you don't have enough to feel it
when you touch a filing cabinet or something.
The verdex kits come with a wall wart (at least mine did). If you
plugged that into a UPS, it would seem (at least to a dope like me)
unlikely to take a hit.
Just out of curiosity, you looking to do linux or CE? Or something else?
FWIW, I've been programming a while, but I'm a bit new to embedded as well.
