Well, no. I want to get all of that crufty logic, which for the most
part *misuses* standard autoconf constructs, out of Makefile.in, and
into configure.in, where it rightfully belongs.
That said, it's fairly trivial to let configure.in define whatever
substitutions are needed, to support as many alternative packaging
strategies as we may require.
