Hi all, Google has now requested us to remove _all_ other types of google maps from viking. Again, we will just have to comply. I plan to remove support for all types of google maps from viking by the end of the year. Now, we have more reasons to give OSM a hand. Quy |

On a personal level, this is quite good news for me - I was thinking of doing some GIS stuff using the GoogleEarth/Maps API and now I really know it would have been a complete idiocy. Yes, OSM is the way to go! Does this mean "Magic scissors" and "Go to" are also dead? I won't remove "Magic scissors" and "Go to" myself. They have nothing to do with "Google tilesets". But let's keep low profile on this. Guys from google are more concerned about their jobs (just like all of us) than anything else. If we don't do any harm to their jobs, why should they care (unless they are idiots). Quy |

2008/11/28 Mathieu Albinet <mat...@gm...>: > Does this mean "Magic scissors" and "Go to" are also dead? I'm not familiar with licensing issues. Technically, Google is not the only provider of such data in the electronic world. For the "Go to", Geonames.org offers alternative. For the "Magic scissors", OpenRouteService.org offers routinng alternative based on OpenStreetMap data. Attached the patch and two files that need to go into the src directory. You'd have to run configure again, because the Makefile in the src-directory needs to be recreated. Please use with caution. I verified that 'london, uk' and 'nijmegen, netherlands' work, but that's about the extent of my testing. But it seems so much more is possible with GeoNames than we do now -- perhaps when I get bored another evening I will expand the interface to do more things. Greetings, Hein |
