After much knashing of teeth and pulling of hair I finally have the XSL
build process working for at least one of the docs. And I have to say
that the output is MUCH improved over when I last tried this exercise.
In fact, the output is more than good enough for our productions use.

It looks pretty good to me. I'm assuming you think the .png images
will display well.
If we use XSL will we end up having more control over the output?
For instance, in the existing docs there are a lot of places where 1
or more blank pages follow the end of a section. E.g. in the existing
rxsock doc there is a completely blank page between the table of
contents and the list of figures. I noticed in the XSL doc, that
blank page is gone.
All in all what you have so far looks great.
