There should be an option to pause the game, so that people can pause the game, go somewhere or something, come back, and continue.
If you are in flight, the way to pause the game is by hitting either the "pause" key, or if that does not work, use the vertical bar (shift-backslash). I believe that still works in 0.5.0 though I don't think I have tested it recently.
