I am running lirc 0.6.3pre2 on a 2.4.0-test11 (Debian Woody) with the
IRDEO device, and it works.
I must first load the serial port driver, then unload it, load
lirc_serial and serial.
Probably it's only a Problem of my Hardware, but without loading the
serial driver lirc doesn't work.

This should be char-major-61.
Try to load the module by hand, then use mode2 or xmode2 to test the
hardware. When this works, try to use irrecord.
