you can't make symlinks on fat16/vfat/fat32 paritions. Reformat your SD card into two partitions vfat and ext2.

Peter/Gregg:
Thanks for all the input. I looked at the folder created after the make
install command, and it does have all the symbolic links for all the lib*so*
files within the same folder. All these links remain after making the tar
file.
I think I've discovered what the issue is- when I move the tar file to my SD
card and untar it through the gumstix, the symlinks don't show up at all. If
I try to make one of them myself using ln -s, I'll get something like
'operation not permitted'.
Does anyone know of a SD card configuration/format that would prevent me
from being able to make symbolic links? Is there a work around to this if
the library files are hard-coded into the binaries? It might be that I'm
using a PMP to transfer files from my computer to the SD card.
Well, there's that. I think I've been building the packages the right way
all along (I've tried both 4.3 and 4.4), but it was this tiny detail that
was messing up my libraries.
Gregg, thanks for the updates to that page, it's been really helpful.
Dante
