Hi,
I'm sorry, I don't know where to find the 5v, but here
is the explanation of the heat dissipitation. You are
using a battery of 16V - 3V = 13V * 0.5a (I suppose
500ma) so you the linear regulator have to dissipate
7.5W of power. So it's normal it become very hot.
Maybe you could try to find those small power module
to provide you what you need. sorry, I can't help you
much.
