[Gumstix-users] roomba 5v

I know this is inheritantly wrong list for this but anyways....

Does anyone know where to find a reliable 5v source some where under the 
hood of a roomba. Im currently using a linear 3v regulator hookup to the 
16v battery. The regulator can handle the current drawn by the gum but 
it is getting very warm and I prefer to use something that is properly 
dimensioned for it. Ive poked around with a volt meter on pretty much 
all permutations(well not quite) of metal redly accessible after taking 
of top. I havent yet dared to take apart the deep guts.

Any pointers much appreciated.

Hi, 

I'm sorry, I don't know where to find the 5v, but here
is the explanation of the heat dissipitation.  You are
using a battery of 16V - 3V = 13V * 0.5a (I suppose
500ma) so you the linear regulator have to dissipate
7.5W of power.  So it's normal it become very hot. 
Maybe you could try to find those small power module
to provide you what you need.  sorry, I can't help you
much.

from what they say on the roomba list, there is no reliable 5v source
to draw that much current from.<br>

Does anyone know if Jameco (or some other place in the bay area...need
this by noon tomorrow) has something similar?<br>

I couldnt find any that was as easy to use and didnt require other
components. Im kind of newbie with this stuff.<br>
