That would be great if you guys could work it out together.
Linus, if you base your implementation on the userspace tosh1800-smcinit.c
code, it wouldnt be completely out of the blue, right ?

Of course. Here is the latest patch, its against Miller Net tree. If you 
want a copy of the entire smsc-ircc2.c file instead, tell me.

That would be helpfull and some help also. Is the file to be included in
the kernel? of used as a module? Or none of both?

This is the entire driver file with the lates ALi fixes. As for compiling 
kernel modules, that would take a lot of time to explain, unfortunately, 
and I think others explain it a lot better than me...

Don't worry, I know how to compile modules and the kernel. I'll try and see
if I can get it to work.

I replaced the .c file from my kernel driver directory with the one attached
and compiled it in the kernel. Here is a message that appeared while booting,
this message never appeared before.

Detected unconfigured Toshiba laptop with ALi ISA bridge SMSC IrDA chip,
pre-configuring device.
ERROR: could not configure SIR ioport.
smsc-ircc2, Preconfiguration failed !

Would it be better to compile it as module?

We're getting closer. It passed the ALi initialization and failed in 
reading back configured values - this may not be possible on all devices 
but it's a bit odd.

Try this attached version if you like, it has the checks commented out, 
but this should really not be needed. However I saw that the tosh1800 
smcinit does not verify the values so it may be worth a try.

Do you supply tosh1800-smcinit with some special parameters other than the 
default? If yes, you need to supply the same parameters to the kernel 
module instead.

I will bring up windows and see the parameters there. I don't pass any parameters
for the moment but where should I pass them to the kernel?
