You picked up the latest (yet unreleased) 1.58 version.
It's not finished yet, use 1.57 (I know, I shouldn't have
put the tarball in the /download dir, mistake)
1.58 will among other things have support for PAM.
It needs a bit of portability work first though.
Will be ready soon.
