What version of the kernel are you using? You might give my latest
2.6.5-gnalm1-gum0 kernel patches a try, as there was a scheduling bug
fixed in the latest version. However, your behaviour is the first I've
heard about such sluggish performance.
Also, can you paste the contents of /proc/interrupts? It sounds like
you might be just getting a lot of interrupts, which are just dragging
the system down; that file will show us which one or eliminate that
possible source of problems.
