Webware for Python

for a procject I'm doing with webware at the moment, I have to search an 
internal documentbase consisting of several thousand documents. I'm using 
swish-e at the moment. While swish-e gives very good search results, there is 
the problem that there is no possibility to update an index directly.
Now my question:
Is anybody else of you using a search engine for your webware project?
If yes, what are you using and what are your experiences?
Would it be a good idea to develop a search engine component for webware?
I'm just curious :-)

You can try Swish++ at http://homepage.mac.com/pauljlucas/software/swish/ which supports incremental updates. I'm using exist-db.org right now, an XML Java search engine, via Python XMLRPC calls - it allows case-insensitve searches and of course XML as well as updates, though inserts are not blazing fast. I've used MySQL on document searches of a few thousand docs for raw searches with no need to index, fast enough for me. There's http://www.Mnogosearch.org, though no Python interface to it (there's a Perl interface if you want to rewrite it - only about 600 lines of Perl, so my guess is 400 lines of Python). -- Bill Eldridge Radio Free Asia bill@...

The newest versions of MySQL have a text-field index for doing full text searches. I haven't used it, but it was supposedly added for search engines. You mean, "forget about international support"? Yes, there are several issues to deal with, including: 1) incremental indexing 2) internationalization 3) XML 4) case-insensitive searching 5) Python support The guys at Mnogosearch were interested in adding XML capabilities, but I imagine as they looked at it they realized how difficult the issue is.
