S.M.A.R.T. Monitoring Tools

Dear members of this mailing-list,

I recently (i.e. one week ago) bought myself some HD204UI hdds - unaware of the fact that those were the models affected by the known firmware bug. Since I couldn't find any info like "all models manufactured after xyz are bug-free" I contacted Samsung support, asking for that specific info. And I just got a response: all drives manufactured on/after December 2010 come with the patched firmware. So here, is this info FYI.

FWIW, my drive (below) has a manufacturing date of Dec 2010. (I can live with that - I do know now that everyting's fine.) And Samsung gently ignored my comment about "what genius decided to keep the old version number"... ;-) The only general advice I've got is to use Samsung's warranty check http://www.samsung.com/global/business/hdd/support/warranty.html to see when the warranty ends and calculate backwards in order to get a raw estimate about the date of manufacture. In case of doubt, contact them directly through their contact form - I got my response within 24 hours (German support).
