This is a good segway for my problem - I have the Netgear MA701 - and it
seemed to work fine, although I never got to test it 100%, since it took
some fighting to convince my AP to talk WEP instead of WPA.

By that time, when I fire up the 'stix with the MA701 in the CF slot, the
stix detects it as "Anonymous Memory" - and won't do anything useful with
it.

I stuck the MA701 in a pcmcia-to-cf card, and put it in my laptop (suse
9.2, kernel 2.6.9), and it properly loads the hostap driver and works
fine.

Googling, found a few pages of people talking about some firmware revs of
the MA701 not liking promiscious mode - but that doesn't seem to be what
happened here.

I'll be trying firmware upgrades to the MA701, to see if that helps, in
the meantime - anyone else had a similar problem with this?

When a CF card is detected as "Anonymous Memory" that's almost always 
because something's failing to read the card ID properly, and getting 
0x0000 0x0000 as the ID.  It *could* be a firmware problem on the 
MA701, but I'd have thought that would show up differently (like in the 
wireless layer, not the cf layer).

Having said that, I did flash my MA701 to whatever the latest firmware 
was floating around on the net at the time that I did it -- I did it to 
get AP mode enableable on the card.  Turning on the firmware-writing 
stuff in the wireless stuff in linux worked great on the gumstix.

Yup. This is what happened - it was showing a manfid of 0x0000,0x0000 in
cardctl.

The odd thing being that it worked at one point, then busybox sat, trying
to get a dhcp address from the wlan0 interface overnight, and after I
powercycled/ejected it the next morning, the card no longer was detected
properly.

Chucks, was hoping you wouldn't call me on that.  I can't find my notes 
anywhere.  I'll do some google digging and see if I can find again what 
I found before.

The first part though is to go through kernel config, drill down into 
Networking Support -> Wireless LAN -> turn on "Support downloading 
firmware with Host AP" and rebuild the hostap module, then copy it to 
your gumstix.

This is probably a longshot, but I had a similar problem with my
cfstix and mounting a cf memory card.  I had my gumstix recognizing my
cf card as hda with its original root fs, but once I reflashed to a
newer one it was seen as "Anonymous Memory" and therefore it wouldn't
load the right drivers at boot time.  What fixed it for me was pulling
the gumstix and cfstix boards apart and then clicking them back
together.  I booted it up and it worked first time.  By looking at it
the cfstix and gumstix seemed to be mated together fine, so I'm not
sure if it was coincidence or what, but that did work for me.

While we're on the topic, is there anyone here with experience using zigbee
or gainspan? 

I've been scoping out the project at

but I'm hoping to eliminate the RS232. The xbee runs on 3.3V: can the summit
power USB devices like this? And if not, what's the workaround? 

It seems like zigbee has a longer history and the very convenient xbee--but
gainspan looks like a better tech. I'm right in thinking gainspan would talk
directly to a gumstix (or anything else)? Does gainspan have anything like
the xbee in terms of cost and convenience?

Really just any comments on remote sensors would be appreciated. Thanks!

There have been a number of posts regarding wireless and the Overo fire.

 

Also if you want t compile native code, it is probably easier to just add it
to the image recipe

and re-build the image with the code already installed.

 

There were some links on the wiki telling how to do this. Not sure if they
are still there .

You want "task-native-sdk" as a minimum. There is also additional support
for Perl, Java, etc.

allow-hotplug wlan0
auto wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
        pre-up /sbin/iwconfig wlan0 essid any
        wireless_mode managed
but I have to do ifup wlan0 every time I connect, meaning I have to connect
to the gumstix via serial first in order to get wifi.
what should I change so that I could have wifi on automatically?

i'm not sure why it's not connecting automatically but if you just want it
to work you cant add the ifup comand as an startup script. google how to do
it. takes like ten minutes the first time to figure out.(been a while and i
don't remember...)

containing the following two lines...:

options libertas_sdio helper_name="sd8686_helper.bin"
options libertas_sdio fw_name="sd8686.bin"

to bring up the W-Lan without running "ifup" manually...?

to /etc/network/interfaces by using gedit.

sudo gedit  /etc/network/interfaces and add them to at the end of file.

In that case it should be a matter of:

Only difference is wlan0 rather than wlan1.

Hi Nick,

Creating "/etc/modprobe.conf" with the content

options libertas_sdio helper_name="sd8686_helper.bin"
options libertas_sdio fw_name="sd8686.bin"

makes sure that the kernel driver module "libertas.ko" sends the 
firmware to the device via the call "request_firmware" defined in 
"linux/firmware.h" and loads the helper file in time. File names 
(sd8686.bin, sd8686_helper.bin) are provided to "libertas.ko" by 
"libertas_sdio.ko" which takes the parameters "helper_name" and "fw_name".

Just try the command "modinfo libertas_sdio" on your gumstix... You will 
find the two possible module parameters at the end of the response.

Creating "/etc/modprobe.conf" this way helped me to get rid of running 
"ifup" manually after configuring the wireless stuff for a newly created 
"omap3-console-image".

Creating "/etc/modprobe.conf" has nothing to do with the correct network 
configuration which you definitely need anyway...

I am just curious whether this approach helps anybody else too...

Hi
I tried many things that were suggested. The only thing that kinda worked
for me was adding:

Creating "/etc/modprobe.conf" with the content

options libertas_sdio helper_name="sd8686_helper.bin"
options libertas_sdio fw_name="sd8686.bin"

But it only works if I first login via serial and then type reboot, so still
I need a serial connection.
Any ideas why?
