Hi Dave,

no of course not! You let QLGT do the work. First you have to create a 
map collection for your file (F1->F6). Even if it is only a single on. 
By that you map will appear in the left hand list.

Next you select an area to export (F1->F5). Simply point-left click-move 
the mouse. This will create an entry in the left hand list "Selcted 
Maps". Select the entry->Export Map. Now you can export the area as 
Garmin Custom Map.

You can select/deselect single tiles when you click on them. Thus your 
area to export mustn't be rectangular.

Hi Oliver,

Thanks for the reply!

As ever, one good reply starts a dozen other problems.....

I followed your directions, all that QLGT qould allow was one single 
square of about 4Km sides.  I tried to export that square & that again 
wouldn't finish.

It also seems that I must make my selections with the menu bar, maybe I 
switched the function keys off somewhere???

Hi Dave,

the selection has no limit. However it has a raster of 1024x1024 pixel. Just keep the mouse button pressed while moving the mouse.

What happens while exporting? "It does not finish" is not enough information. The export dialog has very detailed log. Please copy and paste that information.
