I've been trying to get my WinTV Go IR receiver to work with a universal
remote for awhile, and I just got it working, so I figured I'd post a note.
First - get the remotes.tar.bz2 archive from lircd.org. Inside, there's a
config file called RC-5-extended. That will let lircd recognize most
variations of RC-5 remotes. Use that for your lircd.conf, restart lircd, and
run irw. Then, do a code search on the universal remote, and stop when irw
prints something out. Make a note of the setup code the remote is using, and
try all of the buttons on your remote. You may have to search for awhile
before you a find a code where most of the buttons on your remote work. Once
you find a good setup code, edit lircd.conf and change all the names of the
buttons you are using from sys_xx_command_xx to something that matches the
actual button's name, and delete all the other unused buttons.
This should also work with the PVR-150 and other Hauppauge cards with built in
ir receivers, and may or may not work with other types of receivers.
