Dan, a couple of things to look at. (1) There are two serial ports
on the Waysmall (there is on mine & I'm guessing the same on yours).
One of them is for console input, I believe it is the one closer to
the middle of the box (i.e. to the left if you look at the Waysmall
with the Bluetooth antenna at the top left). Make sure you plug
into the serial port for console input. (2) Check the settings
for Hyperterminal. I see the jpeg shows 115200-8-N-1 which is
correct but there might be some other settings you can twiddle.
(3) Hyperterminal works fine, I have used it, but it is very, very
slow to transfer large files (e.g. filesystem image for reflashing).
You might consider getting some other terminal program
(e.g. C-Kermit) and try that instead of figuring out what
is wrong with Hyperterminal.

Hey Dan,

How is the your serial cable made up. For instance, on my computer I have a=
 serial cable connecting to a serial-to-ttl converter, then then a smaller =
cable connecting this to the roboaudiostix/gumstix stack. I can receive ver=
y similar to what you receive if I plug in the last cable the wrong way rou=
nd so my suggestion is to check that your have the wires connected to the r=
ight lines to start with. If you are using a tweener then I apologise, but =
I can only talk from my experience using the robostix/gumstix configuration.

  Now I'm sure this is supposed to be the Welcome screen, as it is repeatab=
le and exactly the same each time I plug and unplug the Gumstix. It just se=
ems like instead of the english letters, I'm getting random ASCII code.

  Can someone please help me get talking to my Gumstix so I can start progr=
amming it and having some fun?
