If you're using Gnome, you may have fallen victim of the fact that, by
default, it uses a separate keymap for every window. In Desktop >
Preferences > Keyboard > Layouts, make sure Dvorak appears at the top of
the list of "Selected layouts" and that "Separate group for each window"
If you're not using Gnome, `setxkbmap dvorak` in a terminal or your
.xsession will do the trick. Alternatively, you can edit
/etc/X11/xorg.conf's "XkbLayout" option to "dvorak". (Another email
mentioned "dk" --- I believe that refers to a Danish keyboard, not to
You shouldn't have to do anything special to Gaim --- it doesn't know
anything about keymaps.
(If you're using Windows, it does a similar one-keymap-per-window trick
which cannot be turned off. Your best bet there is making Dvorak the
default. I can't say how to do that offhand.)
