These are disk image files, a way of distributing apps on Mac OS
X. Upon download, they are unpacked and displayed as a volume, so the
user can just drag over the application to their folder of choice.

Not sure what you mean by changeable. They can be written by the
application, and the user could change/delete them also, although with
some effort (to find them).

Mac OS X uses Unicode internally. However, wxWindows was not able to
use Unicode on Mac OS X until recently. This has been fixed, and
wxPerl also can use Unicode on Mac now. I only discovered that
yesterday, though :-)
